Tala al-Badru Alayna (Arabic: طَلَعَ البَدْرُ عَلَينَا) was sung to welcome the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ upon his arrival in the city of Madinah during the Hijrah (migration) from Makkah in the year 622 CE.

The Poem
طَلَعَ الْبَدْرُ عَلَيْنَا ❁
مِنْ ثَنِيَّاتِ الْوَدَاعْ ❁
Ṭalaʿa l-badru ʿalaynā,
min thanīyāti l-wadāʿ.
1. The full moon has risen upon us,
from the valley of Wada.
وَجَبَ الشُّكْرُ عَلَيْنَا ❁
مَا دَعَا لِلّٰهِ دَاعْ ❁
Wajaba sh-shukru ʿalaynā,
mā daʿā lillāhi dāʿ.
2. Gratitude is incumbent upon us,
when a caller calls to Allah.
أَيُّهَا الْمَبْعُوثُ فِينَا ❁
جِئْتَ بِالْأَمْرِ الْمُطَاعْ ❁
Ayyuha l-mabʿūthu fīnā,
ji’ta bi l-amri l-muṭāʿ.
3. O you who has been sent amongst us,
you came with the command to be obeyed.
جِئْتَ شَرَفْتَ الْمَدِينَةَ ❁
مَرْحَبًا يَا خَيْرَ دَاعْ ❁
Ji’ta sharrafta l-Madīnah,
marḥaban yā khayra dāʿ.
4. You came and honoured Madinah;
welcome, O noblest caller to God!
طَلَعَ النُّورُ الْمُبِينُ ❁
نُورُ خَيْرِ الْمُرْسَلِينْ ❁
Ṭalaʿa n-nūru l-mubīnu,
nūru khayri l-mursalīn.
5. The clear light has risen,
the light of the best of messengers.
نُورُ أَمْنٍ وَسَلَامٍ ❁
نُورُ حَقٍّ وَيَقِينْ ❁
Nūru amnin wa salāmin,
nūru ḥaqqin wa yaqīn.
6. A light of peace and safety,
a light of truth and certainty.
سَاقَهُ اللهُ تَعَالَى ❁
رَحْمَةً لِلْعَالَمِينْ ❁
Sāqahu Llāhu taʿālā,
raḥmatan li l-ʿālamīn.
7. Sent by Allah Most High,
a mercy to all the worlds.
فَعَلَى الْبَرِّ شُعَاعٌ ❁
وَعَلَى الْبَحْرِ شُعَاعْ ❁
Fa ʿala l-barri shuʿā’un,
wa ʿala l-baḥri shuʿā.
8. Its radiance shines on land,
and on sea.
مَرْحَبًا يَا مُصْطَفَانَا ❁
نُورُكَ الْغَالِي أَضَاءْ ❁
Marḥaban yā muṣṭafānā,
nūruka l-ghālī aḍā’.
9. Welcome, O our Chosen One,
your precious light has shone forth.
رُغْمَ أَنْفِ الْمُلْحِدِينَ ❁
فَيْضُهُ عَمَّ الْبِقَاعْ ❁
Rughma anfi l-mulḥidīna,
fayḍuhu ʿamma l-biqāʿ.
10. Despite the disbelievers’ denial,
his grace has spread across the lands.
أَشْرَقَتْ شَمْسُ الْكَمَالِ ❁
بِكَ يَا بَاهِي الْجَمَالْ ❁
Ashraqat shamsu l-kamāli,
bika yā bāhī l-jamāl.
11. The sun of perfection has risen,
by you, O radiant in beauty.
جَلَّ مَنْ سَوَّاكَ حَقًّا ❁
دَائِمًا لِلْخَيْرِ سَاعْ ❁
Jalla man sawwāka ḥaqqan,
dā’iman li l-khayri sāʿ.
12. Exalted is He who truly formed you,
ever striving toward goodness.
صَفْوَةُ الْبَارِي مُحَمَّدٌ ❁
دُرَّةٌ لِلْكَائِنَاتْ ❁
Ṣafwatu l-Bārī Muḥammadun,
durratun li l-kā’ināt.
13. Muhammad, the Chosen of the Creator,
a pearl among all creation.
مَدْحُهُ بَلْسَمُ رُوحِي ❁
وَلَهُ يَحْلُو السَّمَاعْ ❁
Madḥuhu balsamu rūḥī,
wa lahu yaḥlū s-samāʿ.
14. His praise is balm to my soul,
and sweet is its sound to hear.
يَا خِتَامَ الْأَنْبِيَاءِ ❁
يَا إِمَامَ الْأَوْلِيَاءْ ❁
Yā khitāma l-anbiyā’i.
Yā imāma l-awliyā’.
15. O Seal of the Prophets!
O Leader of the Saints!
رَحْمَةً أُرْسِلْتَ طَهَ ❁
مُنْقِذًا بَعْدَ الضَّيَاعْ ❁
Raḥmatan ursilta Ṭāhā,
munqiẓan baʿda ḍ-ḍayāʿ.
16. You were sent as mercy, O Taha,
a saviour after loss and ruin.
صَلَوَاتُ اللهِ تُهْدَى ❁
لَكَ مِنَّا وَالسَّلَامْ ❁
Ṣalawātu Llāhi tuhdā,
laka minnā wa s-salām.
17. Blessings of Allah are sent to you,
and peace from all of us.
يَا أَبَا الْقَاسِمِ يَا مَنْ ❁
أَمْرُهُ دَوْمًا مُطَاعْ ❁
Yā Aba l-Qāsimi yā man,
amruhu dawman muṭāʿ.
18. O Aba al-Qasim, O you,
whose word is ever obeyed.
بَيْنَ كَتْفَهِ عَلَامَةٌ ❁
خَاتِمُ الرُّسْلِ الْكِرَامْ ❁
Bayna katfahi ʿalāmah,
khātimu r-rusli l-kirām.
19. Between his shoulder blades is a mark,
the Seal of all the Noble Messengers.
أَشْرَقَ الْبَدْرُ عَلَيْنَا ❁
وَاخْتَفَى بَدْرُ التَّمَامْ ❁
Ashraqa l-badru ʿalaynā,
wa-khtafā badru t-tamām.
20. The full moon has risen upon us,
and all other full moons have faded.
مِثْلُ حُسْنِكَ مَا رَأَيْنَا ❁
فِي الْعِرَاقَيْنِ وَشَامْ ❁
Mithla ḥusnika mā ra’aynā,
fī l-ʿIrāqayni wa Shām.
21. We have never seen beauty like yours,
not in Iraq, nor in the Levant.
رَبِّ فَاجْعَلْ مُجْتَمَعْنَا ❁
غَايَتُهْ حُسْنُ الْخِتَامْ ❁
Rabbi fajʿal mujtamaʿnā,
ghāyatuh ḥusnu l-khitām.
22. My Lord, make the goal of our gathering,
a beautiful ending.
وَأَعْطِنَا مَا قَدْ سَأَلْنَا ❁
مِنْ عَطَايَاكَ الْجِسَامْ ❁
Wa aʿṭinā mā qad sa’alnā,
min ʿaṭāyāka l-jisām.
23. And grant us what we have asked for,
from Your vast, abundant gifts.
وَأَكْرِمِ الْأَرْوَاحَ مِنَّا ❁
بِاللِّقَاءْ خَيْرِ الْأَنَامْ ❁
Wa akrimi l-arwāḥa minnā,
bi l-liqā’ khayri l-anām.
24. And honour our souls by granting us,
a meeting with the Best of Creation.
وَابْلِغِ الْمُخْتَارَ عَنَّا ❁
مِنْ صَلَاةٍ وَسَلَامْ ❁
Wa-blighi l-mukhtāra ʿannā,
min ṣalātin wa salām.
25. And convey to the Chosen One from us,
blessings and peace.

As the Prophet ﷺ approached Yathrib (soon to be called Madinah an-Nabi, “the City of the Prophet”), the Ansar (the Helpers of Madinah)—men, women, and children—gathered outside the city in joy and anticipation. As they saw the Prophet ﷺ appear through the mountain passes of al-Wada, they greeted him with this poem.

According to classical sources, only the first four lines are considered historically likely to have been sung by the people of Madinah when the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ arrived. The remaining verses, often found in modern renditions, were composed over the centuries. In the version below, lines 19 to 25 were written by the Yemeni scholar and saint Habib Ali al-Habashi (d. 1915 CE). The rest of the verses (lines 5-18 below) are poetic additions by other authors.
