On Words of Love and the Intense Suffering of Passion

(ENGLISH TRANSLATION COURTESY OF – THE BURDAH (THE SINGABLE TRANSLATION) BY MOSTAFA AZZAM)
Amin tadhakkuri jeeraanin bidhee salami
Mazajta dam’an jaraa min muqlatin bi dami
Is it from thinking of neighbours past in Dhu Selemi
That you have mixed blood in tears that flow from eyes steadily?

-Am habbatir riHu min tilqaa-i kaazhimatin
Wa-awmadal barqu fizh zhalmaa-i min -idami
Or blowing of wind from the direction of Kazimah
And lightning flashing from Idum in the dark that you see?

Famaa li’aynayka -inqultak fufaa hamataa
Wa maa li qalbika -inqultas tafiq yahimi
So what is wrong with your eyes: when you say “Stop!” they just weep?
And with your heart: when you say, “Be sane!” it acts crazily?

-AyaHsabus sabbu -annal Hubba munkatimun
Maa bayna munsajimin minhu wa mudtarimi
Does one so lovestruck imagine love is concealable
Between a downpour from it and being so fiery?

Lawlal hawaa lam turiq dam’an ‘alaa talalin
Wa laa -ariqta li dhikril baani wal ‘alami
If not for passion, you would have never burst into tears
At the remains, nor lost sleep over the mount or the tree

Fakayfa tunkiru Hubban ba’da maa shahidat
Bihi ‘alayka ‘udoolud dam’i was saqami
So how do you still deny a love to which testified
Against you true witnesses of tears and infirmity;

Wa-athbatal wajdu khattay ‘abratin wa danan
Mithlal bahaari ‘alaa khaddayka wal ‘anami
When grief has fixed on your cheeks canals of tears and malaise
Like branches of dogwood, red, and daffodils, yellowy?

Na’am saraa tayfu man -ahwaa fa-arraqanee
Wal Hubbu ya’taridul ladh dhaati bil-alami
Yes, sights of my love have come at night and kept me awake;
How love repels all delights and comforts with agony!

Yaa laa-imee fil hawal ‘udhriyyi ma’dhiratan
Minni -ilayka wa law-ansafta lam talumi
You critic of love so passionate, an apology from me to you
—but if you were true, you’d not censure me

”Adatka Haaliya laa sirree bi mustatirin
‘Anil wushaati wa laa daa-ee bi munHasimi
May you be spared what I bear—my secret isn’t concealed
From haters, nor is there any end to my malady

MaH Hadtanin nusHa laakin lastu -asma’uhu
-Innal MuHibba ‘anil ‘udhdhaali fi samami
You’ve offered me true advice, but simply, I hear it not;
The lover is deaf to all of those who speak critically

Innit tahamtu naseeHash shaybi fi ‘adhalee
Washshaybu -ab’adu fi nusHin ‘anit tuhami
I’ve even doubted gray hair’s advice when it censures me;
Although gray hair with advice is less in dubiety

BURDAH CHAPTER 2

A Caution About the Whims of the Self

(ENGLISH TRANSLATION COURTESY OF – THE BURDAH (THE SINGABLE TRANSLATION) BY MOSTAFA AZZAM)
Fainna -ammaarati bissu-i mat ta’azhat
Min jahlihaa bi nadheerish shaybi wal harami
My evil ego, in its stupidity, paid no heed
To all the warning of greying hair and seniority

Wa laa -a’addat minal fi’lil jameeli qiraa
Dayfin -alamma bi ra-asee ghayra muHtashimi
And hasn’t set out a spread of pleasing actions to host
A guest who showed at my head, bereft of timidity

Law kuntu -a’lamu -anni maa -uwaqqiruhu
Katamtu sirran badaa li minhu bil katami
And had I known that I’d fail to honour him, I’d have hidden
Using hair colorant, his first appearance to me

Man li biraddi jimaaHin min ghawaayatihaa
Kamaa yuraddu jimaaHul khayli billujumi
Who’s there for me to control the fight of its wandering—
Just as a bit bridles horses in their obstinacy?

Falaa tarum bil ma’aasi kasra shahwatihaa
-Innatta’aama yuqawwi shahwatan nahimi
So do not count on offenses to get rid of its lust;
Food only intensifies the craving of gluttony

Wannafsu kattifli -in tuhmilhu shabba ‘alaa
Hubbir radaa’i wa-in taftimhu yanfatimi
The ego is like a baby: leave it and it grows up
In love with suckling; but wean it, and it’s weaned finally

Fasrif hawaahaa wa Haadhir -an tuwalliyahu
-Innal hawaa maa tawallaa yusmi -aw yasimi
So fight its whim, and beware of giving power to it;
When whim’s empowered, it kills or damages markedly

Wa raa’ihaa wahya fil -a’maali saa-imatun
Wa-in hiyas taHlatil mar’aa falaa tusimi
And shepherd it carefully as it is grazing in deeds;
And if the pasture you find it fancies, don’t let it be

Kam Hassanat ladh dhatan lil mar-i qaatilatan
Min Haythu lam yadri -annas summa fiddasami
How many times it’s convinced a man of killer delights—
While blind to the poison in the gravy so savoury!

Wakhshad dasaa-isa min joo’in wa min shiba’in
Farubba makhmasatin sharrun minat tukhami
Beware the ambush of being hungry and being full;
Starvation at times is even worse than satiety

Wastafrighid dam’a min ‘aynin qadimtala-at
Minal maHaarimi walzam Him yatan nadami
And void of tears eyes that have been stuffed with forbidden things
Keep in the shelter of pure repentance unceasingly

Wa khaalifin nafsa wash shaytaana wa’sihimaa
Wa-in humaa maHadaakan nusHa fattahimi
And contradict both the Self and Devil, and disobey!
And if they give true advice to you, still look sceptically

Wa laa tuti’ minhumaa khasmaan wa laa Hakaman
Fa-anta ta’rifu kaydal khasmi wal Hakami
And do not settle with either as your lawyer or foe;
You’re well aware of a lawyer’s and a foe’s treachery

-AstaghfiruLlaaha min qawlin bi laa ‘amalin
Laqad nasbtu bihi naslan li dhee ‘uqumi
I ask for pardon from God for empty word with no deed;
I have ascribed by it to a sterile man progeny

-Amartukal khayra laakin ma- tamartu bihi
Wa mas taqamtu famaa qawlee lakastaqimi
I’ve ordered you to do good, but have ignored it, myself;
I’m not upstanding, so who am I to tell you to be?

Wa laa tazawwadtu qablal mawti naafilatan
Wa lam -usalli siwaa fardin walam -asumi
I haven’t packed extra deeds in preparation for death;
I haven’t prayed, haven’t fasted, but the compulsory

BURDAH CHAPTER 3

On the Praise of the Prophet (SAW)

(ENGLISH TRANSLATION COURTESY OF – THE BURDAH (THE SINGABLE TRANSLATION) BY MOSTAFA AZZAM)
Zhalamtu sunnata man -aHyazh zhalaama -ilaa
-Anish takat qadamaahud durra min warami
I’ve violated the way of him who livened the dark
Until his feet had complained of swelling up painfully;

Wa shadda min saghabin -aHshaa-ahu wa tawaa
TaHtal Hijaarati kashHan mutrafal -adami
And out of hunger, would bind his abdomen and would wrap
Beneath a hard stone a waist whose skin is so velvety

Waraawadathul jibaalush shummu min dhahabin
‘An nafsihi fa-araahaa -ayyamaa shamami
The lofty mountains made into gold for him tried to be
A way to bait him, so he true loftiness let them see

Wa-akkadat zuhdahu fihaa darooratuhu
-Innaddaroorata laa ta’du ‘alal ‘isami
His “poverty” only strengthened his disinterest in them;
For never are protectees assaulted by poverty

Wa kayfa tad’oo -ilad dunyaa darooratu man
Lawlaahu lam tukhrajid dunyaa minal ‘adami
How could it tempt to this world—the “poverty” of him who If not for him
The whole world would not have been made to be

MuHammadun sayyidul kawnayni waththaqalayni
Wal fareeqayni min ‘urbin wa min ‘ajami
Muhammad, the master of both worlds and both beings and both groups:
The Arabs and the non-Arab community;

Nabiyyunal aamirun naahee falaa -aHadun
Our Prophet, who is commander and forbidder—there is
No one more true in his saying no or yes than is he

Huwal Habeebul ladhee turjaa shafaa’atuhu
Li kulli hawlin minal -ahwaali muqtaHami
He is the loved one whose intercession we’re hopeful of
At every horror to hit—yes, every calamity

Da’aa -ilaLlaahi fal mustamsikoona bihi
Mustamsikoona bi Hablin ghayri munfasimi
He has invited to God, so all who grip onto him
Are gripping rope that will never fray for eternity

Faaqan nabiyyeena fi khalqin wa fi khuluqin
Wa lam yudaanoohu fi ‘ilmin wa laa karami
He tops the Prophets in both appearance and character;
They don’t approach him in knowledge or in generosity

Wa kulluhum min rasooliLlaahi multamisun
Gharfan minal baHri -aw rashfan minaddiyami
And all of them are receiving from Allah’s Messenger
A sip from down-pouring rain or handful scooped from the sea

Wa waaqifoona ladayhi ‘inda Haddihimi
Min nuqtatil ‘ilmi -aw min shaklatil Hikami
And all are standing before him at their own limits fixed:
A dot of knowledge or mark from words of sagacity

Fahwal ladhee tamma ma’naahu wa sooratuhu
Thummas tafaahu Habeeban baari-un nasami
He is the one with perfected essence and outward form;
Picked as the love of the maker of all humanity

Munazzahun ‘an shareekin fi maHaa sinihi
Fa jawharul Husni fihi ghayru munqasimi
Beyond a partner in his so beautiful qualities;
Yes, undivided in him is beauty’s whole entity

Da’ mad da’athun nasaaaraa fi nabiyyihimi
WaHkum bimaa shi-ta madHan fihi waH takimi
Avoid what Christians have claimed about their own Messenger;
And give to him any praise you wish, and praise sensibly

Wansub -ilaa dhaatihi maa shi-ta min sharafin
Wansub -ilaa qadrihi maa shi-ta min ‘izhami
Ascribe to his person what you wish of nobility;
Ascribe to his stature what you wish of immensity

Fainna fadla rasooliLlaahi laysa lahu
Haddun fayu’riba ‘anhu naatiqun bifami
Indeed, Allah’s Messenger’s perfection has no frontier
That any speaker could ever verbalize orally

Law naasabat qadrahu aayaatuhu ‘izhaman
-AHyas muhu Heena yud’aa daarisar rimami
And were his marvels to match his worth in greatness, his name
When called, would give life to bones decayed to nihility

Lam yamtaHinnaa bimaa ta’yal ‘uqoolu bihi
Hirsan ‘alaynaa falam nartab walam nahimi
He tried us not, from concern, with things that boggle the mind;
And so we haven’t faced any doubt or perplexity

-A’yal waraa fahmu ma’naahu fa laysa yuraa
Fil qurbi walbu’di fihi ghayru munfaHimi
Conceiving his meaning has exhausted the universe;
So near or far, one not dumbstruck by it you will not see

Kash shamsi tazhharu lil’aynayni min bu’udin
Sagheeratan wa tukillut tarfa min -amami
Much like the sun: from afar it does appear small to eyes
And would impair any vision when in proximity

Wa kayfa yudriku fid dunyaa Haqeeqatahu
Qawmun niyaamun tasallaw ‘anhu bil Hulumi
And how could people asleep, distracted from him by dreams
Begin to grasp in the present world his reality!

Famablaghul ‘ilmi fihi -annahu basharun
Wa -annahu khayru khalqiLlaahi kullihimi
The peak of knowledge about him is that he is a man
And is the best of Allah’s creation, entirely

Wakullu aayin -atar ruslul kiraamu bihaa
Fa-innamat tasalat min noorihi bihimi
And all the marvels the noble Messengers have conveyed
Have come to them from the light of Ahmad exclusively

Fa-innahu shamsu fadlin hum kawaakibuhaa
Yuzhhirna -anwaarahaa linnaasi fizh zhulami
He is the Sun of esteem, to which they are as if moons:
Reflecting its lights in darknesses to humanity

-Akrim bi khalqi nabiyyin zaanahu khuluqun
Bil Husni mushtamilin bil bishri muttasimi
How grand the form of a Prophet brightened by character
Enveloped by handsomeness, distinguished by jollity!

Kazzahri fi tarafin wal badri fi sharafin
Wal baHri fi karamin waddahri fi himami
Like flowers in fineness, the full moon in ascendancy
The ocean in giving, and all time in tenacity

Kaannahu wahwa fardun min jalaalatihi
Fi ‘askarin Heena talqaahu wa fi Hashami
When he’s alone and you meet him, he is like one amid
An army and entourage, because of his majesty

Ka-annamal lu-lu-ul maknoonu fi sadafin
Min ma’dinaa mantiqin minhu wa mubtasami
From treasure chests of his eloquence and his beaming grin
Do seem to be pearls preserved within their shells preciously

Laa teeba ya’dilu turban damma -a’zhumahu
Toobaa li muntashiqin minhu wa multathimi
No scent compares to the earth embracing his blessed form;
For him who sniffs it or kisses it what felicity!

BURDAH CHAPTER 4

On His Birth (SAW)

(ENGLISH TRANSLATION COURTESY OF – THE BURDAH (THE SINGABLE TRANSLATION) BY MOSTAFA AZZAM)
-Abaana mawliduhu ‘an teebi ‘unsurihi
Yaa teeba mubtada-in minhu wa mukhtatami
His noble birth did reveal the purity of his roots
How pure the outset of them as well as finality!

Yawmun tafarrasa fihil fursu -annahumu
Qad -undhiroo biHuloolil bu-si wanniqami
A day the Persians perceived that they indeed had been warned
Of the occurrence of suffering and adversity

Wa baata -eewaanu kisraa wahwa munsadi’un
Kashamli -asHaabi kisraa ghayra multa-imi
The Arch of Khosrau had passed the night while falling apart;
Just like the status of Khosrau’s peers: without unity

Wannaaru khaamidatul -anfaasi min -asafin
‘Alayhi wannahru saahil ‘ayni min sadami
The fire was short of breath out of regret over it
The river lost all its current out of despondency

Wa saa-a saawata -an ghaadat buHayratuhaa
Warudda waariduhaa bil ghayzhi Heena zhami
It saddened Sawa to find the drying up of its lake
And thirsty seekers returning from the place angrily

Ka-anna binnaari maa bilmaa-i min balalin
Huznan wabilmaa-i maa binnaari min darami
As if the fire had gotten water’s wetness from grief;
And water had burnt up as a fire burns seethingly

Wal jinnu tahtifu wal-anwaaru saati’atun
Wal Haqqu yazhharu min ma’nan wa min kalimi
The jinn were speaking aloud, and lights were shining so bright;
The Truth is made manifest in signal, verbally

‘Amoo wa sammu fa-i’laanul bashaa-iri lam
Yusma’ wa baariqatul -indhaari lam tushami
But blind and deaf they were so the happy news went unheard;
And flashes of lightning as a warning they didn’t see

Min ba’di maa -akhbaral -aqwaama kaahinuhum
Bi-anna deenahumul mu’wajja lam yaqumi
All after their fortune teller notified all the folk
Their old religion so crooked soon would no longer be

Wa ba’da maa ‘aayanoo fil -ufqi min shuhubin
Munqaddatin wafqa maa fil -ardi min sanami
And after they eyed in the horizons the shooting stars
All crashing like statues in the earth for idolatry

Hatta ghadaa ‘an tareeqil waHyi munhazimun
Minash shayaateeni yaqfoo -ithra munhazimi
Until from the source of revelation, up in the sky
One after the other, each retreating demon did flee

Ka-annahum haraban -abtaalu -abrahatin
-Aw ‘askarin bil Hasaa min raaHatayhi rumee
They were when fleeing just like the heroes of Abrahah
Or like a pelted-with-pebbles-from-his-hands infantry

Nabdhan bihi ba’da tasbeeHin bibatnihimaa
Nabdhal musabbiHi min -aHshaa-i multaqimi
Hurled after having extolled while in the palms of his hands;
Hurled like the swallowed extoller from the gut cavity

BURDAH CHAPTER 5

On the Miracles that Manifested at His Hand (SAW)

(ENGLISH TRANSLATION COURTESY OF – THE BURDAH (THE SINGABLE TRANSLATION) BY MOSTAFA AZZAM)
Jaa-at lida’watihil -ashjaaru saajidatan
Tamshee -ilayhi ‘alaa saaqin bilaa qadami
The trees had come for his call, prostrate in humility;
They came to him on their trunks, like footless legs walking free

Ka-annamaa satarat satran limaa katabat
Furoo’uhaa min badi’il khatti billaqami
As if they had drawn along the way a straight line for what
Their branches had written in the finest calligraphy

Mithlal ghamaamati -annaa saara saa-iratan
Taqihi Harra wateesin lilhajeeri Hami
Just like the cloud moving with him as he moved anywhere;
From noon’s intense oven heat protecting him constantly

-Aqsamtu bilqamaril munshaqqi -inna lahu
Min qalbihi nisbatan mabrooratal qasami
I swear an oath by the moon, which split in two, that it has
A likeness to his pure heart—an oath of veracity

Wa maa Hawal ghaaru min khayrin wa min karamin
Wa kullu tarfin minal kuffari ‘anhu ‘amee
And what the cave did contain of good and nobility;
With every look from the disbelievers too blind to see

Fassidqu fil ghaari wassiddeequ lam yarimaa
Wa hum yaqooloona maa bil ghaari min -arimi
The Truth and Truthful in Faith inside the cave hadn’t moved;
All while they were saying that inside the cave none could be

Zhannul Hamaama wa zhannul ‘ankaboota ‘alaa
Khayril bariyyati lam tansuj wa lam taHumi
They thought no dove hovered and no spider spun any web
For him, the Best of Creation—thinking its vacancy

WiqaayatuLlaahi -aghnat ‘an mudaa’afatin
Minadduroo’i wa’an ‘aalin minal -utumi
Protection from God made needless reinforced armature
Or towering citadels providing security

Maa saamanid dahru dayman wastajartu bihi
-Illaa wa niltu jiwaaran minhu lam yudami
No day has time gone to harm me and I have sought his care
But that I have gotten care from him, without mockery

Wa lal tamastu ghinad daarayni min yadihi
-Illas talamtun nadaa min khayri mustalami
Nor have I asked of the riches of both worlds from his hand
Without largesse from the best of givers coming to me

Laa tunkiril waHya min ru-yaahu -inna lahu
Qalban idhaa naamatil ‘aynaani lam yanami
Do not deny revelation from his dreaming, because
His heart, though his eyes may shut, is open wide and does see

Wa dhaaka Heena bulooghin min nubuwwatihi
Falaysa yunkaru fihi Haalu muH talimi
And that was so at the very start of his prophethood:
So with that state of the dreaming no one can disagree

TabaarakaLlaahu maa waHyun bimuktasabin
Wa laa nabiyyun ‘alaa ghaybin bimuttahami
How blest is God: revelation isn’t something attained;
Nor is a Prophet suspected in what we do not see

Kam -abra-at wasiban billamsi raaHatuhu
Wa-atlaqat -ariban minribqatil lamami
How many times has his palm by touch relieved the unwell
And freed the helpless from in the noose of insanity

Wa-aHyatis sanatash shahbaa-a da’watuhu
Hatta Hakat ghurratan fil -a’surid duhumi
His call gave life to a gray and barren year full of drought;
Till it became like a star in ages of ebony

Bi ‘aaridin jaada -aw khiltal bitaaHa bihaa
Sayban minal yammi -aw saylan minal ‘arimi
With teeming clouds—you’d have thought the valleys had rivers flow
In from the sea, or a flooded dam that gushed viciously

BURDAH CHAPTER 6

On the Noble Quran

(ENGLISH TRANSLATION COURTESY OF – THE BURDAH (THE SINGABLE TRANSLATION) BY MOSTAFA AZZAM)
Da’nee wa wasfiya aayaatin lahu zhaharat
Zhahoora naaril qiraa laylan ‘alaa ‘alami
Leave me alone to describe his miracles, which are plain
As nightly fire on mountains, lit as a courtesy

Faddurru yazdaadu Husnan wahwa muntazhimun
Wa laysa yanqusu qadran ghayra muntazhimi
For pearls increase in their beauty when arranged on a string
But aren’t less precious kept alone and separately

Famaa tataawulu aamaalil madeeHi -ila
Maa fihi min karamil -akhlaaqi wash shiyami
What eulogizing has any hope of stretching to reach
What he possesses in noble nature and quality?

Aayaatu Haqqin minar raHmaani muHdathatun
Qadeematun sifatul mawsoofi bilqidami
True signs from the Merciful, originated in time, beginningless
Traits of Him, who is beginninglessly
(In some Burdah texts and also in the translation by Mostafa Azam, chapter 6
begins with this couplet)

Lam taqtarin bizamaanin wahya tukhbirunaa
‘Anil ma’aadi wa’an ‘aadin wa’an -irami
They aren’t bound by constraints of time, as they tell us of
The day to come, also Aad and Irum—past history

Daamat ladaynaa fafaaqat kulla mu’jizatin
Minan nabiyeena -idh jaa-at walam tadumi
They stayed among us, and so transcended all miracles
From all the Prophets, as they had come and then ceased to be

MuHakkamaatun famaa tubqeena min shubahin
Lidhee shiqaaqin wa maa tabgheena min Hakami
So wise and clear, that they leave no room for a single doubt
To an opponent and have no need for a referee

Maa Hooribat qattu -illaa ‘aada min Harabin
-A’dal -a’aadee ilayhaa mulqiyas salami
And never were they attacked except that from battle did
Return to them with surrendered arms the worst enemy

Raddat balaaghatuhaa da’waa mu’aaridiha
Raddal ghayoori yadal jaanee ‘a nil Hurami
Their eloquence fought off their dissenters’ claim, as a man
That is protective fights off attack from his family

Lahaa ma’aanin kamawjil baHri fi madadin
Wa fawqa jawharihi fil Husni wal qiyami
Possessing meanings like waves upon the sea in support;
Surpassing its treasures in allure and sublimity

Famaa tu’addu wa laa tuHsaa ‘ajaa-ibuhaa
Wa laa tusaamu ‘alal -ikthaari bissa-ami
Such that their wonders are countless and beyond any bound
And never found to be tiresome in great quantity

Qarrat bihaa ‘aynu qaareehaa faqultu lahu
Laqad zhafirta biHabliLlaahi fa’tasimi
By them is soothed their reciter’s eye, so I said to him
“You have indeed found the rope of God, so hold steadily.”

-In tatluhaa kheefatan min Harri naaari lazhaa
-Atfa-ta Harra lazhaa min wirdihash shabimi
If you recite them in worry of the fire of Hell
From their cool fountain you douse the burn of Hell utterly

Ka-annahal Hawdu tabyaddul wujoohu bihi
Minal ‘usaati wa qad jaa-oohu kal Humami
Just like the Basin, as it is whitening every face
Of sinners coming to it like coals as black as can be

Wa kassiraati wa kalmeezaani ma’dilatan
Falqistu min ghayrihaa finnaasi lam yaqumi
And like the straight Bridge and like the Balance in equity:
Without them no justice is maintained in society

Laa ta’jaban li Hasoodin raaHa yunkiruhaa
Tajaahulan wahwa ‘aynul Haadhiqil fahimi
Be not amazed by a hater in denial of them
Who acts unknowing despite full knowledge and mastery

Qad tunkirul ‘aynu daw-ash shamsi min ramadin
Wa yunkirul famu ta’mal maa-i min saqami
An eye may even reject the light of sun when inflamed;
A mouth rejecting the taste of water from malady

BURDAH CHAPTER 7

On the Prophet’s (SAW) Night Journey and Ascension

(ENGLISH TRANSLATION COURTESY OF – THE BURDAH (THE SINGABLE TRANSLATION) BY MOSTAFA AZZAM)
Yaa khayra man yammamal ‘aafoona saaHatahu
Sa’yan wa fawqa mutoonil -aynu qir rusumi
O best of those whose front yard is sought by those seeking good
On foot and on backs of camels treading vigorously!

Wa man huwal aayatul kubraa limu’tabirin
Wa man huwan ni’matul ‘uzhmaa limughtanimi
And you who are sign supreme for one who does seek to know!
And greatest blessing for one in search of prosperity!

Sarayta min Haramin laylan -ilaa Haramin
Wamaa saral badru fi daajin minazh zhulami
From sanctum to sanctum you had made the trip overnight;
Just as the moon makes the trip through darkness nocturnally

Wa bitta tarqaa -ilaa -an nilta manzilatan
Win qaaba qawsayni lam tudrak wa lam turami
You spent the night rising up until you had reached a place
A length of two bows, not gained or sought in all history

Wa qaddamatka jamee’ul -anbiyaa-i bihaa
Warrusli taqdeema makhdoomin ‘alaa khadami
And all the Prophets and Messengers had put you ahead
Just as the served over servants has the priority

Wa -anta takhtariqus sab’at tibaaqa bihim
Fi mawkibin kunta fihi saaHibal ‘alami
As you proceeded through all the seven levels with them
In a procession, you were the banner bearer to see;

Hatta -idhaa lam tada’ sha-wan limustabiqin
Minad dunuwwi wa laa marqan li mustanimi
Until you had left no goal for the ambitious in hope
Of closeness, nor height for someone seeking ascendency

Khafadta kulla maqaamin bil-idaafati -idh
Noodeeta birraf ‘i mithlal mufradil ‘alami
You humbled all ranks by annexation: you were addressed
Like unannexed proper noun, with singular dignity

Kayma tafooza bi waslin -ayyi mustatirin
-Anil ‘uyooni wa sirrin-ayyi muktatami
So that you triumph with a connection oh so concealed
From eyes, and a secret oh so shrouded in mystery!

FaHuzta kulla fakhaarin ghayra mushtarakin
Wa juzta kulla maqaamin ghayra muzdaHami
So you obtained every glory, no one else joining you;
And you surpassed all alone, unchallenged, every degree

The measure of stations you were granted, what majesty!
Attaining the blessings you were given, what rarity!

Bushraa lanaa ma’sharal -islaami -inna lanaa
Minal ‘inaayati ruknan ghayra munhadimi
Great news for us, people of Islam! Indeed, we possess
A pillar of special care erected unbreakably

Lammaa da’aLlaahu daa’eenaa litaa’atihi
Bi-akramir rusli kunnaa -akramal -umami
And since Allah called the one who called us to serving Him
The Greatest Prophet, we are the greatest community

BURDAH CHAPTER 8

On the Martial Struggle of the Prophet (SAW)

(ENGLISH TRANSLATION COURTESY OF – THE BURDAH (THE SINGABLE TRANSLATION) BY MOSTAFA AZZAM)
(The gentlest of souls until the enemy forced the fight
Abusing him and all his companions so brutally
The many years of their torture, murder, and tyranny
He chose to bear and endure—and those with him—patiently
Their only crime being that they called to God, Him alone;
An invitation delivered by them all peacefully
Until the order from God came down to him, the command:
If they keep fighting your call, now fight them back physically
Though tenderness and compassion are your nature
We know, The time has come you must stop their stopping people from Me
And when it came to the rights of God, the Gentle was fierce;
And struck all horror into the heart of each enemy
-Extra lines of poetry by Mostafa Azzam)

Raa’at quloobal ‘idaa -anbaa-u bi’thatihi
Kanab-atin -ajfalat ghuflan minal ghanami
The news of his being sent alarmed the hearts of the foes
Just like a roar causing heedless sheep to startle and flee-

Maa zaala yalqaa humu fi kulli mu’tarakin
Hattaa Hakaw bilqanaa laHman ‘alaa wadami
He kept courageously facing them at each battlefield
Till they were butchered by spears like meat in a butchery

Waddul firaara fakaadoo yaghbitoona bihi
-Ashlaa-a shaalat ma’al ‘iqbaani war rakhami
They longed to flee so much that they watched the parts carried off
By buzzards and vultures in a state of near jealousy

Tamdil layaalee wa laa yadroona ‘iddatahaa
Maa lam takun min layaalil -ashhuril Hurumi
The nights would pass with them unaware the number of them
Except the nights of the Sacred Months of tranquillity

Ka-annamad deenu dayfun Halla saaHatahum
Bi kulli qarmin -ilaa laHmil ‘idaa qarimi
As if religion had been a guest arrived at their yard
With every nobleman craving meat of the enemy

Yajurru baHra khameesin fawqa saabiHatin
Yarmee bi mawjin minal -abtaali multatimi
It brought an ocean of troops on gracefully-floating steeds
Advancing waves made of heroes, surging successively

Min kulli muntadibin liLlaahi muHtasibin
Yastoo bi musta-silin lilkufri mustalimi
Each in response to the call of God, in hope of reward
Attacking armed to uproot and shatter idolatry

Hattaa ghadat millatul -islaami wahya bihim
Min ba’di ghurbatihaa mawsoolatar raHimi
Until the Faith of Islam, with them among it, became—
Once having been foreign—now a unified family

Makfoolatan -abadan minhum bi khayri -abin
Wa khayri ba’lin falam taytam wa lam ta-imi
Protected forever from them by the best father and
Best husband, so not an orphan or a widow is she

Humul jibaalu fasal ‘anhum musaadimahum
Madhaa ra-aa minhumu fi kulli mustadami
They are the mountains, so ask about them their battle-foe
At every battle, the things from them that he used to see

Wa sal Hunaynan wa sal badran wa sal -uHudan
Fusoolu Hatfin lahum -adhaa minal wakhami
And ask Hunayn, question Badr, and even ask Uhud, too—
Events of death for them, worse than plague in catastrophe

Almusdiril beedi Humran ba’da maa waradat
Minal ‘idaa kulla muswaddin minal limami
Returning white blades now turned to crimson after they reached
The fighters with flowing hair of black from the enemy

Wal kaatibeena bisumril khatti maa tarakat
-Aqlaamuhum Harfa jismin ghayra mun’ajimi
Inscribing with spears of Lettering, their pens didn’t leave
A body line with undotted i, and crossed every t

Shaakis silaaHi lahum seemaa tumayyizuhum
Wal wardu yamtaazu bisseemaa ‘anissalami
With sharpened weapons they had a mark to set them apart;
A rose is set by its mark apart from a thorny tree

Tuhdee -ilayka riyaaHun nasri nashrahumu
FataHsabuz zahra fil -akmaami kulla kami
The victory winds convey to you the sweet news of them;
So flowers in bloom you’d reckon every soldier to be

Ka-annahum fi zhuhooril khayli nabtu ruban
Min shiddatil Hazmi laa min shiddatil Huzumi
They were in horseback like firmly-rooted plants up on hills—
From grit so solid, not girth of saddle held solidly

Taarat quloobul ‘idaa min ba-sihim faraqan
Fa maa tufarriqu baynal bahmi wal buhami
The enemies’ hearts were fluttering in fear of their force
Unable to tell a lamb apart from brave cavalry

Wa man takun bi rasooliLlaahi nusratuhu
-In talqahul -usdu fi aajaa mihaa tajimi
Whoever is aided by the Messenger of Allah
If lions meet him inside their woods, they bow silently

Wa lan taraa min waliyyin ghayra muntasirin
Bihi wa laa min ‘aduwwin ghayra munqasimi
You will not see any saint that isn’t victorious
Through him, nor any opponent not destroyed utterly

-AHalla -ummatahu fi Hirzi millatihi
Kallaythi Halla ma’al -ashbaali fi -ajami
He put his nation to dwell inside the fort of his faith;
Like lion dwelling inside the forest with progeny

Kam jaddalat kalimaatuLlaahi min jadilin
Fihi wa kam khasamal burhaanu min khasimi
How often the words of God refuted the quarrelsome
About him! How often proof defeated the enemy!

Kafaaka bil ‘ilmi fil -ummiyyi mu’jizatan
Fil jaahiliyyati watta-deeba fil yutumi
Enlightenment in the one unread is wonder enough
In Age of Darkness; and good upbringing in orphancy

BURDAH CHAPTER 9

On Seeking Intercession through the Prophet (SAW)

(ENGLISH TRANSLATION COURTESY OF – THE BURDAH (THE SINGABLE TRANSLATION) BY MOSTAFA AZZAM)
Khadamtuhu bimadiHin -astaqeelu bihi
Dhunooba ‘umrin madaa fish shi’ri wal khidami
I’ve served him with eulogy by which I seek to erase
The sins of life spent in poem and in servility

-Idh qalladaaniya ma tukhshaa ‘awaaqibuhu
Ka-annanee bihimaa hadyun minan na’ami
For they have led me to things of horrible aftermath;
Akin to livestock decreed by them for the butchery

-Ata’tu ghayyas sibaa fil Haalatayni wa maa
Hasaltu -illaa ‘alal aathaami wannadami
I have obeyed the deceit of youth in both cases and
Got nothing but sins and then regret, oh, what misery!

Fayaa khasaarata nafsin fi tijaaratihaa
Lam tashtarid deena biddunyaa wa lam tasumi
Oh, what a loss for my soul, the awful deal that it made!
Not buying faith with this world, not even browsing to see

Wa man yabi’ aajilan minhu bi ‘aajilihi
Yabin lahul ghabnu fi bay’in wa fi salami
Whoever sells off his future for his present will come
To see the loss in his sale and future delivery

-In aati dhanban fa maa ‘ahdee bi muntaqidin
Minan nabiyyi wa laa Habli bimunsarimi
If I engage in a sin, my covenant isn’t void with him
The Prophet; nor is the rope dis-severed from me

Fa-inna li dhimmatan minhu bitasmiyatee
MuHammadan wahwa -awfal khalqi bidh dhimami
By naming my son Muhammad I am in pledge to him;
And none is more faithful in fulfilling pledges than he

-In lam yakun fi ma’aadee aakhidhan bi yadee
Fadlan wa-illaa a qul yaa zallatal qadami
At my appointment, if he’s not holding onto my hand—
In graciousness—say, “Oh, what a fall into tragedy!”

Haashaahu -an yaHrimar raajee makaarimahu
-Aw yarji’al jaaru minhu ghayra muHtarami
Far be it from him to bar the aspirant of his gifts
Or send away in dishonour from him a refugee

Wa mundhu -alzamtu -afkaari madaa-iHahu
Wajadtuhu li khalaasee khayra multazimi
And since committing my thoughts to singing praises of him
I’ve found him to be the most committed to saving me

Wa lan yafootal ghinaa minhu yadan taribat
-Innal Hayaa yunbitul -azhaara fil -akami
The riches from him will not neglect a poor, dusty hand;
Indeed, the rain causes even hills to be flowery

Wa lam -urid zahratad dunyal latiq tatafat
Yadaa zuhayrin bimaa -athnaa ‘alaa harimi
I sought no bloom of the lower world the hands of Zuhayr
Had picked for having presented Herim with flattery

BURDAH CHAPTER 10

On Intimate Conversation and Cherished Hopes

(ENGLISH TRANSLATION COURTESY OF – THE BURDAH (THE SINGABLE TRANSLATION) BY MOSTAFA AZZAM)
(O my beloved, I beg of you in life and in death
To wrap your Burdah of special care and love over me
-Extra lines of poetry by Mostafa Azzam)

Yaa -akramal khalqi maa li man -aloodhu bihi
Siwaaka ‘inda Huloolil Haadithil ‘amimi
Most Noble of All Creation, what refuge do I have
But you at the coming of the global emergency?

Wa lan yadeeqa rasoolaLlaahi jaahuka bi
-Idhal kareemu tajallaa bismi muntaqimi
O Messenger of Allah, your rank won’t shrink from me when
The Generous manifests His punishing quality

Fa-inna min joodikad dunyaa wa darratahaa
Wa min ‘uloomika ‘ilmal lawHi wal qalami
Yes, from your grace is indeed the world as well as its mate;
And of your knowledge the Tablet and the Pen of decree

Ya nafsu laa taqnatee min zallatin ‘azhumat
Innal kabaa-ira fil ghufraani kallamami
O soul, despair not because of a mistake that is grave;
Enormities are like slips compared to His clemency

La’alla raHmata Rabbi Hina yaqsimuhaa
Ta-tee ‘alaa Hasabil ‘isyaani fil qisami
And hopefully, mercy from my Lord when He gives it out
Will come according to sinfulness in its quantity

Yaa Rabbi waj’al rajaa-ee ghayra mun’akisin
Ladayka waj’al Hisaabee ghayra munkharimi
My Lord, and make not my hope a hope that is overturned
With you; and make my expectance with no deficiency

Waltuf bi’abdika fid daarayni -inna lahu
Sabran mataa tad’uhul -ahwaalu yanhazimi
Be kind to Your slave in both abodes; for his fortitude
Whenever terrors call out to it will turn tail and flee

Wa-dhan lisuHbi salaatin minka daa-imatin
‘Alan nabiyyi bimunhallin wa munsajimi
Let clouds of blessing from You, unending, rain down upon
The Prophet, with pouring rain so heavily, steadily

Maa rannaHat ‘adhabaatil baani reeHu saban
Wa-atrabal ‘eesa Haadil ‘eesi bin naghami
For longer than willow branches by the east wind are swayed;
And camel drivers excite the camels with melody

Thummar ridaa ‘an -abi bakrin wa ‘an ‘umarin
Wa ‘an ‘aliyyin wa ‘an ‘uthmaana dhil karami
Then pleasure with Abu Bakr, the greatest of company
And Umar, bearer of Truth, and then Uthman, and Ali

Wa aali was saHbi thummat taabi’eena fahum
-Ahlut tuqaa wannuqaa wal Hilmi wal karami
The Family and Companions and all the Followers
The people of purity and patience and piety

Yaa Rabbi bil Mustafa balligh maqaasidanaa
Waghfirlanaa maa madaa yaa waasi’al karami
My Lord, by the Chosen One, make our hopes come to be
And pardon us what has gone, O Vast in Generosity

Waghfir -ilaahee li kullil muslimeena bimaa
Yatloona fil masjidil -aqsaa wa fil Harami
And please, my God, do forgive all of the Muslims
By what they all recite at the Holy Mosque and the Sanctity
(Especially the composer and the translator and all the reciters with passion and in sincerity)

Bi jaahi man baytuhu fi taybatin Haramun
Wa-ismuhu qasamun min-a’zhamil qasami
By the prestige of him who the Goodly Land is his home;
Whose very name is an oath of greatest immensity

Wa hadhihi burdatul mukhtaari qad khutimat
WalHamdu liLlaahi fi bad-in wa fi khatami
This is the Burdah of the Selected One, now complete;
And praise Allah at the start and finish, eternally!

-Abyaatuhaa qad -atat sitteena ma’ mi-atin
Farrij bihaa karbanaa yaa wasi’al karami
The number of verses in it is one sixty or more;
Relieve by them our woes, O Vast in Gen’rosity!

(The last seven verses are not in the Burdah, but were added at a later date)
